Australian permanent residents planning on travelling outside the country should check when their travel facility expires before going. Although having an Australian permanent visa allows you to live in Australia indefinitely, your visa travel facility only lasts for a specified period. This is important to bear in mind even if you are only planning to migrate to Australia.
If you find that your permanent visa’s travel facility has expired or is about to expire and you intend to travel overseas, you will need a Resident Return Visa (RRV) in order for you to retain your Australian permanent resident status.

While you can apply for an RRV outside of Australia, it is recommended that you apply before you leave Australia, as leaving it at the last minute may result in airport check-in difficulties when attempting to re-enter Australia.
