Farm Labour shortages
In response to the current farm labor crisis, a new visa scheme is introduced by the government which will recruit farm workers from 10 South East Asian Nations which includes Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, The Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam. This new visa is introduced to tackle 10,000 farm worker shortage that could have been created by the new Free Trade Agreement between Australia and UK. The details of the visa are yet to be finalized but is planned to be in effect by September. South Australia is already running a trial where workers from Vanuatu needs to go through two weeks of quarantine before flying to south Australia and immediately to SA quarantine camps. State government of South Australia and the producers are sharing the cost of each worker where each worker gets paid a certain amount on top of wages. For example, workers get paid $2600 on top of $30 wages per crate.
