There has been speculation amongst the media over the past few months that there would be a leadership challenge within the presiding Liberal government. Last night this speculation became a reality with an internal vote announced for cabinet members to attend and decide once and for all who would be the agreed upon Prime Minister of Australia.
The final voting resulted in a 54 – 44 win for Malcom Turnball.
As was done in the previous Labour government, the Liberal party overturned the leadership internally and announced that Tony Abbott was no longer the Prime Minister of Australia. This morning, many Australians woke to the news that they had a new Prime Minister, Malcolm Turnball.
Malcom Turnball has assured that many of the policies instigated by former Prime Minister Tony Abbott would stand but it was the leadership which would change.
The new Prime Minister of Australia wasted no time in establishing himself to the media and people of Australia. “We need to have in this country and we will have now, an economic vision, a leadership that explains the great challenges and opportunities that we face.”
“This will be a thoroughly Liberal government. It will be a thoroughly Liberal government committed to freedom, the individual and the market.”
