How do I apply for Australian Citizenship?

Australia is one of the best countries in the world to live in when it comes to lifestyle, education and business opportunities. This is particularly evident due to the annual increase in numbers of applications for Australian Citizenship.  Applying for Australian Citizenship is an involved process and starts with proving eligibility.

As per the Department of Immigration and Border Protection stipulations, you are eligible to apply for Australian Citizenship if you are:

  • New Zealand citizen living in Australia
  • Migrant with permanent residence
  • Spouse or partner of an Australian citizen
  • Person born in Papua before independence in 1975
  • Refugee or humanitarian entrant

Eligibility is also available for children who are:

  • Child of a former Australian citizen
  • Child aged 16 or 17 years
  • Child aged 15 years or under or an unaccompanied minor
  • Commonwealth Child Migration scheme arrival

Documentation and supporting information will be required to prove the eligibility.  In regards to the evidence of being a permanent resident if you are a migrant applying for Australian Citizenship, there are several processes you need to go through.

Once you have obtained your Visa to live and work in Australia, you must become a permanent resident. Visa options to live and work in Australia as a permanent resident include:

  • Skilled – Regional (Residence) Visa (subclass 887)
  • Regional Sponsored (Provisional) Visa  (subclass 475 and 487)

If you are a permanent resident this means you have been granted a permanent visa.  A permanent Visa (whilst it’s still valid) gives you the same rights as an Australian citizen with the exception of not being able to vote and having to reapply for your permanent residency once your permanent visa has expired.  If you become an Australian citizen, this removes the obligation of having to reapply for a permanent visa (Resident Return Visa – RRV).
