It may surprise you that there are currently 14,000 international students studying and living on the Gold Coast. From this figure it is estimated that one third of these international students originate from China which has led the local council to move forward with plans to encourage more students and even families to make the Gold Coast their destination of choice.
The Gold Coast City Council has been public with it’s proposed plans to recreate some of the Southport district into China town with many local businesses already being snapped up by Chinese investors. However, it is the students which are assisting with sustaining the local economy with over $1 billion a year being injected into the area through education, real estate, retail and tourism while they are studying.
The potential benefit the influx of international students has for the Gold Coast – particularly Chinese students – has been seen as such a significant contributor to the community that Gold Coast Tourism has opened an office in Shanghai, China.
Gold Coast Mayor, Tom Tate is positive that recommended council planning will help encourage more international students to the South Queensland shores. “One of the action items endorsed by councillors is the delivery of a Chinese readiness program to local suppliers and tourism operators.”
