New English Language Testing for Visa applications

There will be significant changes coming in to effect as of the 23rd of November (this Sunday) in regards to the testing and test scores to assess and specify the proficiency of the English language for Visa applicants to Australia.

Any Visa applicant who lodges their application on and after the 23rd of November will receive one of the following standards in their competency and understanding of English:

Vocational English

  • Competent English
  • Proficient English
  • Superior English

The level of proficiency will be determined by the new standards set for each of the individual tests.

The proficiency levels will be accepted through any of the four tests below:

IELTS : International English Language Testing System

  • OET: Occupational English Test
  • TOEFL: Test of English as a Foreign Language
  • Pearson: PTE Academic

There are however, still exceptions for those Visa applicants who are not required to sit an English Language test. If the applicant holds a valid passport issued by the United States of America, New Zealand, Canada, the Republic of Ireland or the United Kingdom, they will not be required to prove their proficiency in English.
