How Business owners can ensure their workers are legal

With the amount of skilled visa applicants and holders increasing to Australia every year, the onus on Australian business owners to ensure they are hiring ‘legal’ visa holders is also on the rise.

Employees who are automatically entitled and allowed to work in Australia are:

  • Australian citizens
  • Australian permanent residents
  • New Zealand citizens

If a business owner suspects the job applicant is a foreign national then this is when the proper checks need to be conducted. It is the responsibility of the employer to check on any conditions or restrictions which be placed on the applicants right to work in Australia. The Department of Immigration and Border Protection have provided a number of resources to make these checks as easy as possible. These facilities include:

Register for Visa Entitlement Verification Online (VEVO) system. This is a free service provided by the government where employers can request job applicants to mailed to them via this system which checks the visa work entitlements.
