Australian Government Cracks Down on Illegal Workers

Several weeks ago the area of Carabooda in Western Australia resembled a Hollywood action movie with police cars and vans flooding the area after an investigation led authorities to a compound suspected of housing an organised crime syndicate and approximately 180 foreign nationals who were under suspicion of being used as illegal workers.

The 180 workers in question included men, women and even children originating from several different countries and all being investigated by The Department of Immigration checking their visa status.

The raid of the syndicate suspected of money laundering in Western Australia received praise from the Minister for Immigration and Border Protection, the Hon Scott Morrison. “I am pleased with the role played by both the Australian Customs and Border Protection Service and the Department of Immigration and Border Protection as part of this operation.  It demonstrates that the determination and professionalism shown by our agencies as part of Operation Sovereign Borders is being followed through and beyond people smuggling to present a unified border.”

The Western Australia police lead a multi-agency effort across both state and federal jurisdictions. “The Abbott Government will continue to put a high priority on border protection and enforcement of our custom and immigration laws,” said Minister Morrison. “This successful operation shows that this focus does not start and stop with stopping the boats.”
